Pros

  • Blazingly instantaneous
  • 100 times the rated survival of NAND SSDs
  • Stunning IOPs numbers racket

Cons

  • Rougly twice the terms of the average NVMe/PCIe SSD

Our Verdict

If you want the fastest, longest lasting storage for your PC, Intel's SSD 900P with its Optane memory is it. It's especially faster with applications such as video and sound content creation and editing that can thread multiple writes.

Some people get their PC kicks from gaming, much from watching high-resoluteness multimedia, unusual from reconciliation the books (die down figure). Us? Give U.S.A an SSD that measures performance in gigabytes per second. And if you lack to make our Saturday night, have us a drive like Intel's new blazingly fast Optane SSD 900P that delivers all over 500,000 IOPs (small input signal/outturn operations), rather than the normal 100,000 or so. To heck with dinner and a movie!

Note: This review is part of our best SSDs roundup. Give-up the ghost there for details nearly competing products and how we tested them.

Aim and specs

When a company markets pricey entities such as the Optane SSD 900P ($389 for 280GB or $599 for 480GB) to the enthusiast market, looks can help close the deal. Not that Intel's silver-hued 750 and P3608 were slimy ducklings, but the all-black, metal-detailed SSD 900P looks aggressive and virtual-combat quick. The heatsink/case isn't as bling-y (yes, it's a word… to America), as say the Plextor M8Pe surgery the Apacer Ranger, but it looks meaner. As mean as its performance. You can compare other drives we've tested in our comprehensive roundup of the best SSDs.

The Optane SSD 900P certainly isn't departure to embarrass you when residing in your gaming rig. By our lights, it's one of the C. H. Best looking PCIe SSDs ever.

Piece in that respect's a 2.5-edge in version available, Intel sent United States of America the 480GB x4 PCIe-card. The drive uses the NVMe protocol, sol if you'rhenium scheme can't kick from that, Don River't bother. Actually, call off that. Bother to buy a new system.

Optane at long last

The hype just about the 3D XPoint memory used in Optane memory board products is that while it's not-volatile the like NAND, retaining data without external powerfulness, information technology can perform like DRAM. Heady, game-ever-changing shove. Unfortunately, the first Optane product we proverb, the  caching memory card released earlier this class, was a complete forty winks-fest—reading alike an NVMe SSD but writing little faster than a SATA SSD. Were the claims mere fantasise? Were there unforeseen technical glitches? Whatever the intellect, we and everyone else were singularly unimpressed.

That was then, this is like a sho, and thanks to the SSD 900P,  we'atomic number 75 acquiring a glimpse of what might cost possible with Optane/3D Xpoint.

Performance for days

The Optane SSD 900P plowed through our tests well-nig as if they weren't in that respect. Having assigned an hour for the process, we were left speculative what to do with the unexpended 45 proceedings.

The AS SSD bench mark rated the drive at 2,287MBps reading and 1,702MBps writing. As you can see below, that's not rather the fastest we've seen, only it's hoot fast. Yet sequential throughput is only component of this tug's tarradiddle. Atomic number 3 SSD issues the FUA command to bypass caching, which, if a drive heeds it, shows United States the true capabilities of the memory on board. Intel tells us that the drive indeed acknowledges FUA, and so what you're seeing below should be naked as a jaybird 3D XPoint.

Leave the Intel P3608 score—that's 2 NVMe drives running in Foray 0. The 900P is clearly a force to be reckoned with—about especially with smaller files.

The 900P's low-queue 4K reads (below) were the sincere eye-undoer—literally 6 times faster than the nighest challenger. This can be a major advantage if you'Ra running a program that keep lots of small files open, first all those small config files when you archetypal boot your operating system, surgery eating something like a video encoder.

The Intel SSD 900P holds a six-turn up advantage over its nearest rival when reading small files.

CrystalDiskMark had au fon the same affair to state just about the Intel Optane SSD 900P that AS SSD did: rattling good sequential throughput and supremely fast itty-bitty file in reads.

Though the Samsung 960 Favoring outpaces the Intel Optane SSD 900P with sequential writes, it's simply not in the very league with un-queued small file reads.

In our true-world copy tests, which we use to verify the results of the synthetic benchmarks and stain inconsistencies, it took the Optane SSD 900P 13 seconds to say a 20GB file away, and the same amount of time to drop a line information technology. Writing a 20GB set of smaller files and folders took 55 seconds, and 58 seconds to learn them rear. That's quicker than most (though non quite wholly) of the competition.

Merely most of the small files and folders we copy aren't nearly as tiny as those used by the synthetic benchmark. Some of the first files that we copy are, and with them we detected write speeds of 20MBps to 24MBps, where we'll usually see 17MBps to 19MBps.

20gb copies intel 900p IDG

Though not the fastest at everything (the Intel 750 folder write score is an anomaly we're stock-still puzzling over), the Intel SSD 900P is clearly a fast drive.

According to Intel, there should be a noticeable system-all-embracing improvement in performance. We're positive there leave be improvements in OS boot times, multi-tasking, and task-switching. How noticeable, we can't allege until we've washed-out more sentence with it.

But performance is entirely piece of the story. The Intel Optane SSD 900P has other tog out its sleeve, and for those worried about their SSD wearing out—it's a doozy.

Methuselah-comparable endurance

While 3D XPoint retentiveness hasn't delivered the promised DRAM-like speed thus far, Intel is bad confident in its endurance. The 480GB Optane SSD 900P we tested is rated for an absolutely ludicrous 8,750TBW (TeraBytes Written), or 8.75 petabytes. That makes the  the 200TBW or so similar capacity NAND-based SSDs are rated for seem worthless.

To all intents and purposes, if the predictions are correct (Intel actually says "up to 8,750TBW"), the SSD 900P is immortal. Leastways in terms of the technological ecosystem it inhabits.

We should power point out that even the far lower TBW ratings of NAND SSDs provide the corresponding applied "immortality". Two hundred terabytes is more than the on-going average user is likely to write in a decade, at which stop, the drive will verisimilar equal superannuated. Complete that aforesaid, with 4K and ever-increasing bandwidth available, we'll take the 8.75 petabytes.

A winner

If you want the best memory board for your consumer PC—the Intel Optane SSD 900P is information technology. When you factor in longevity, nothing else even comes close.

The SSD 900P is good-looking, profligate, and probably to come out-subterminal the system you arrange IT in.

Simply the Optane SSD 900P is dear. In terms of have sex-for-the-buck you can get some the same subjective experience for about half the dough with a garden-variety PCIe/NVMe SSD. Just about consumers should look for rightful that.

And did we just say garden-variety PCIe/NVMe? Mankin, things have come a interminable way in the storage macrocosm. We can't wait to see whether Optane/3D XPoint really can match Drachm race and smash down the barriers between repositing and intense computer memory. As promised.
